Product Safety Alert – GKL221 Charger (part number 733271)
Product Safety Alert – GKL221 Charger (part number 733271)
Under a combination of certain specific circumstances as defined below this device may exceed the limits of the relevant standard IEC EN 60950-1:2006/A12:2011 and overheat.

This issue only occurs when all of the following conditions occur together:

  • Charging of two batteries with a capacity of 2.6 Ah or higher (such as a Leica GEB212, GEB 221, GEB 222, GEB 241 or GEB242) at the same time and
  • Line Voltage at the low end of the range (110 V and below) and
  • High ambient temperature (> 25 °C) and
  • Firmware revision of less than 1.26 (S/N below 75351 and no label “FW 1.26” or “1.26”)

To correct this possible safety issue, Leica Geosystems has released the firmware update 1.26 and full product safety can therefore be restored with a simple firmware update.

As of today, Leica Geosystems has received no notice of any complaints associated with this issue.

However as a precautionary measure, we have decided to offer all customers concerned by this possible safety issue a cost-free inspection of the GKL221 charger and to provide a firmware update free of charge as appropriate. This precautionary measure only affects this model of charger and no other products.

Leica Geosystems recommends that customers who might be affected contact the Leica Geosystems Sales Organization where they originally purchased this product so that arrangements can be made accordingly.

If you have any questions about this product safety alert please contact your nearest Leica Geosystems Service Center.
